Travel Healthy: Tips for TakingYour Family’s Healthy Lifestyle With You on Holidays

Summer holidays are approaching and whether you are planning a week at the cottage or a plane ride to an exotic countryside, you will want to stay healthy while away! Vacations can be a nice break from your regular routine and provide opportunity to try new things, but keeping a few essentials in mind will help you enjoy your health as well as your holiday!

7 Healthy Travel Must-Haves

Water Bottle

Bring it! Hotels, resorts, restaurants, airplanes and cottages usually have jugs of filtered water on hand.  Keep your water bottle close at all times and fill up whenever you can throughout the day while travelling and relaxing!

Snacks

Make them! Before your trip, whip together your own  home made version of trail mix with whole grain, low sugar cereals, raisins and almonds, and store in resealable bags. Bake some healthy banana oat cookies for the plane and cut up fresh fruit and veggies for the car ride. Even take a few empty ziploc bags with you to grab a few extra healthy snacks for later.

Running Shoes

Pack them! For every member of your family! Plan to get active on your vacation. Slip in a run before breakfast, a game of tennis before lunch, a hike after dinner. Staying active keeps you healthy and makes all the relaxing more rewarding!

Sun Protection

Do it! Vacations are not all about the tan. Make sure you are using a good quality sunscreen, reapplying after swimming and wearing hats and finding shade. All the healthy benefits from the sun can be found in Vitamin D supplements so make sure you cover up to prevent sun damage.

Vitamins

Don’t forget them! A break from routine is wonderful, but a break from taking vitamins can be unhealthy. Keep your immune system strong with Vitamins D, Multi, and Omega 3s, keep your energy up with B Vitamins and make sure kids are getting enough Calcium if milk is not on the vacation menu.

Sleep

Get lots! If you are travelling to a different time zone, try to get the kids sleep pattern adjusted a few days before hand. This avoids being sleep deprived (and grumpy) for the first few days of your vacation!

Restaurant Rules

Plan them! French fries, ice cream brownies, and Shirley temples are all fun treats, but if you are at All-You-Can-Eat buffets, or restaurants while on vacation, too many treat days in a row may not be so healthy. Plan to have vegetables and fruit every day and ensure there is protein at every meal. Make treat foods, a treat – even on vacation.

Pack it, plan it, bring it, drink it, eat it and ENJOY it!  Have a healthy & happy summer, where ever your vacation may take you!

Travel – Planning is a pain!

Introducing my newest feature, a Travel Section!!!

Travel is something many of us enjoy, for others the thought of planning a trip can become overwhelming quickly! Well I’m here to help, within this new section I’ll provide you with all of my wisdom, or show you how one can stumble while trying to plan the perfect holiday!

Before my car accident I traveled often, whether it was by plane or car I seemed to be on the move frequently over the course of my life. Most of my childhood weekends were spent in a car with our family, my father played on a touring Cricket team which had us flying to different countries and exploring the US.

These jaunts created the love of travel within me, within my job role I had the opportunity to be flying across Canada with very little notice. With practice I found it an art to find the lowest-priced flights and hotel rooms which met my standards.

After getting married we bought a home and had two amazing daughters within 4 years and our travels were more local. We did drive to Nova Scotia when I was pregnant with out second child and oh that was a learning lesson in itself!

I’ll remember these lessons and be mindful of the challenges of traveling with little children when I’m investigating holidays to tell you about.

Travel-with-disability

Since the car accident we have not traveled nearly as much, but with the trips we’ve made we’ve had to make concessions for my disabilities. With careful planning we’ve been able to ensure I would be comfortable during these trips, both local and further away and I think it would be of benefit for me to share this information with you, my readers.

We also travel as a family which takes more thought than journeys without the children, we’ve found tricks and tips which will be included in each article.

I aim to provide quality information about the resorts, hotels, airlines, dining, entertainment and other companies I find.

Listen, it would be GREAT if we could all just whip out our over-stuffed wallets and book whichever holiday we think looks interesting but for the majority of people this isn’t going to happen.

Within my brand spanking new travel section I hope to give you all a resource for information which will make your holiday plans a reality!!!
