Windows 8 Has Arrived

How fitting that the Windows 8 party in Toronto was held on the eve that Hurricane Sandy rolled in.  If Toronto was Windows 7, then Sandy brought with her the “Frankenstorm” of Windows 8!  No, I am not saying that Windows 8 is Frankenstein, but it is radically different than its predecessor.
Windows 8 Touchscreen Interface
When I first saw Windows 8 across a crowded room, what appeared to me was a desktop of very colorful squares.  I glided over to the computer screen to interact with the system, and immediately learned that the keyboard was not the main way to navigate with Windows 8.  Wow, I thought, this Windows 8 laptop is a touch screen interface!  And once I learned that little trick, the computer and I were as one.
I thought about my Windows 7 laptop at home, and pondered how Windows 8 had greatly departed from that previous version.  Specifically, Windows 8 is all visual: photos telling you where to press, with smaller fonted text labeling each selection.  This is what Microsoft calls “Live Tiles”.  I do have a tablet at home, so I am used to this type of interface, but have to admit it was a new experience when engaging a laptop.
Getting a Feel for Windows 8
So, what kinds of colorful, square and rectangular visual boxes were displayed on the homepage, you may ask?  Part of the visual layout included e-mail, Facebook, a day planner, weather, maps, Internet Explorer, SkyDrive, Bing, Xbox and more.  I will get to the last two shortly, but you can personalize the homepage with best fit choices such as eBay, your favourite blogs, The Huffington Post, etc.
The fact that Bing was integrated into Windows 8 was a great surprise to me.  Bing is like a search engine crash landing into Pinterest, with the latest news presented in a highly visual, pictorial fashion.  I think that Bing will be one of the most popular features of Windows 8.  And again, when you do a search for the latest news on Bing, it appears in those Windows 8 visual squares and rectangles.  But the information appears from left to right, rather than from top to bottom, like most browsers.
Windows 8 Tablet Interfacing with Xbox
Noteworthy, the Windows 8 Tablet can remotely control the Xbox, with a free app that can be downloaded online.  I have to say that at the Windows 8 party, this created quite a stir among gamers and gawkers alike!  In a nutshell, a device like a Windows 8 Tablet is integrated into the Xbox game play, currently as a GPS-driven map.  An Xbox controller is still necessary for game play, which I found a bit erroneous, but the integration of Windows 8/Xbox is a step in the right direction!
The Windows Phone 8 was very consistent with the look and feel of the Windows 8 laptop.  Very visual and pictorial, with the same square and rectangular boxes that Microsoft calls “Live Tiles”.  It had a very intuitive feel to it, and it had cool features like the Rogers Anyplace TV Live app, which plays live games like sports and real-time news.  (The Windows 8 Tablet also has Rogers Anyplace TV on Demand, which includes a broader choice of channels such as Citytv, TVO Kids, HGTV Canada, etc.)
The Rogers Team Demonstrating Anyplace TV Live
The Rogers One Number  feature on the Windows Phone 8 was also very neat, as you can talk, text, send picture messages and video chat with other Rogers One Number users, using your existing wireless phone number.  I liked that this feature does not deduct minutes from your wireless plan.  I also liked that with One Number you can switch calls seamlessly between the Windows Phone 8 and Tablet, as well as permanently block out annoying numbers.
I’m glad that I had the chance to see how different Windows 8 is to its distant cousin Windows 7.  If you’re considering a laptop, tablet or smart phone, you should strongly consider Windows 8 if you want to stay on the cutting edge of technology.  I know that I will be considering Windows 8 when I make a laptop purchase later this November.

WIN Stainless Steel Microwave $699 IKEA – #SummerSpruceUp

For the Summer Spruce Up Event, we are honored to be working with a name synonymous with home decor, IKEA
IKEA is a store which calls to me, each year I wait impatiently for the catalogue to be released and spend far too much time pouring over the pages imagining redecorating out home. When my husband and I first moved in together we had very little money and very little furniture. We were fortunate that our families handed us down many pieces of furniture but our very first purchase together was a couch from IKEA.
This couch is still kicking, it cost $499 at the time over 10 years ago and has lasted through 2 babies, 2 dogs and 6 puppies so far! I just cannot justify buying a hip new couch from IKEA yet, our 10 year old beauty is still in great shape.
IKEA is the major sponsor of our Summer Spruce Up Event, and is giving one lucky winner a DATID!
This is a Stainless Steel Microwave oven, valued at $699! This is a high cabinet installed microwave, so that it gives you space on your counter to work, and is at a comfortable working height.  It has 7 preset auto cook functions, 6 preset auto reheat functions, and 4 auto defrost functions!  This will make microwave cooking even more time saving, and easy!
Entry is open to residents of Canada, simply fill in the Rafflecopter form below!

Win $50 Gift Card From Rona – #SummerSpruceUp

The Summer Spruce Up event is rolling along, Monday I brought you the Beyond Bedding review and giveaway, today is all about Rona.

Rona is a Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, home improvement and gardening products. How could we not love Rona when they are using such marketing genius as their latest campaign which had my husband and I in stitches.

Rona took the term “Doing It Right” and put a spin on it using a contractor personality who shows you how Rona wouldn’t do it. They managed to show how they would do it right by presenting a hilarious example of the opposite. I’m going to slip in a vid here simply because it amuses me.

A Review on Rona Paint :

We painted over 3 regular walls, and 1 ugly wall. Normally we would need to do primer and 2 coats of paint on the regular walls, and probably 2 coats of primer on the ugly wall with 2 coats of paint.

For the paint and primer in one we did 2 coats total on the regular walls (so eliminating the primer coat), and 3 coats on the ugly wall. I would say it eliminated some work, and looks great now! We are quite happy with it, and would use it again for sure.

Rona definitely did it right in our home. Thank you Rona!!

How would you like to Spruce Up your home with a $50 Rona Gift Certificate?

Simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below to WIN a children’s bedding set (as seen in the links below), this GIVEAWAY is open to residents of Canada 18+.
Winner will be drawn on August 31  and have 48 hours to respond before an alternate winner is chosen.

Apparently I CAN Decorate – Vinyl Disorder Review & Giveaway

I have loved wall quotes for a long time but had never found any saying that I thought I’d want displayed in our home long term. Frankly I also doubted my ability to actually apply the words or use a stencil to paint it where I wanted it… I’ve been living vicariously via Pinterest boards and my talented friends homes.

Not anymore friends, I found the perfect product and words which now beautify our home!!

Vinyl Disorder is a company who provide custom vinyl decals, wall and car decals, band stickers and so much more. You can order in large quantities or as I did individually. They’ve made it super simple for folks like me who are decoratively (yes I think I’ve made that word up) challenged.

When I was browsing their site I had little hope of finding something I’d want to display when I came across their Christian scripture wall decal category and was shocked to see they offered both of my daughters life verses! I went ahead and ordered the 36″ versions of Ask, Seek, Knock and Be Strong and of Good Courage, both in white.

When they arrived I was pleased to see they were in a hard cardboard tube and came with very simple instructions to follow.

The decals come with 3 layers, a top sheet, the vinyl lettering and a back sheet.

Step 1 had me removing the back sheet.

Sounds simple right?

Well it’s not so simple, you have to go very slowly and use the plastic tool they include to rub the letters hard onto the top sheet so they don’t pull off with the back sheet.

Patience is apparently a virtue which I wasn’t born with….

Step 2 is to apply the decal to the wall.

First I would suggest using a level and mark the line which you want the decal to follow. As you can see I didn’t follow my own advice and it’s a bit tilted. It helped to have an assistant at this stage, the girls held the front sheet away from the wall as I applied it

Step 3 Remove the Top Sheet

Again the key here is to go SLOWLY and use the plastic tool to press the letters onto the wall and slowly remove the front sheet.

The Result

I think it speaks for itself, we’re delighted with the simplicity of the application and the look of our daughter’s life verse in her room.

Chelsea has promised me she’ll look at it EVERY night, she’s super excited and I am impressed with the fact it makes me look like I can decorate……now I’m trying to resist covering every room with these awesome wall decals.

Now the fun part, I get to GIVEAWAY one 36″ wall decal to a reader who lives in the US or Canada and is 18+!!!

Entry is simple, just fill in the Rafflecopter form below. Giveaway ends August 1st and the winner will have 48 hours to respond before I choose another winner.
