Unique Gift Ideas, a Twitter Party & a Giveaway #myurbanwear

As I’ve aged I’ve come to appreciate unique gifts or purchases. Gone are the days when I would head into a pyjama shop and knock folks off my Christmas list all in one shopping trip. It came to me in my mid-30s that personalized gifts matter more than the price tag.

Shocking isn’t it, it actually took me that long! These days I enjoy browsing slowly through antique stores or artisan galleries with my husband, leisurely hunting down fabulous gifts for friends and family. As a woman who is online as much as I do, I was searching for an online alternative to my beloved shopping when a friend recommended I check out MyUrbanWare.ca.

my urbanware is a online marketplace for high quality, rare products made by Canadian artisans. We save you time by making it easier for you to source modern, stylish products at affordable prices. Many of our products are handmade, one of a kind or recycled with prices that compete with mass produced goods.   All of our products are made by Canadians. You know who made your product as we highlight each of our artists on the product page and throughout the website. We hope you enjoy your visit and see you again soon!

See that…it’s online shopping but it’s unique products which are made by Canadian artisans! Nice, now I can support artists, fellow Canadians and score some very special items.

Back To School Shopping for under $100 at Walmart #WalmartFrugalHeroes

Disclosure: I received a $100 Walmart gift card to complete this challenge but as always opinions are my own.

On August 22nd I joined many people across Canada for the 2nd Walmart Frugal Heroes Shopping Challenge. The challenge was to stock up on school supplies for both of my girls for under $100. This past Spring I participated in the 1st Walmart Frugal Heroes Shopping Challenge, the challenge was Decorating My Outdoor Space and although I knew I could find great pricing at Walmart I was concerned I couldn’t do it all for $100 because the list for school supplies was long.

Shopping with my two girls is always a challenge, between their sibling rivalry and the budget I needed a plan! I told each girl they had exactly $50 to spend and was VERY clear that we wouldn’t be going to the clothing or toy sections until we’d gotten all of the school supplies we needed…this was met with groans but eventually they agreed and off we went to our local Walmart.

photo-10The store was very busy and I was glad that we had a plan. We began striking items off our list quickly, there were many items that were only $1.00 (like pencils, glue) so I was feeling quite positive about it all. As we came to the pencil crayons I was ready to negotiate with my daughter. In the past Sydney has always wanted the larger, very pricey art sets but this time she actually chose a less expensive box and explained that she wanted more money to spend elsewhere.

WOW talk about shocker, my girl was actually understanding a budget!

photo-14Taking the girls with me to Walmart really made it a challenge but in the end they were amazing. They actually worked together, Sydney helped Chelsea understand the prices and Chelsea helped Syd pick which colour matched her eyes…sigh.

Once we had finished with the school supplies each of them still had some money to spend so we headed off to the Girls clothing department. They were able to get 2 shirts each and a pair of pants! I was quite surprised at how much we were able to buy with just $100. Our end total was $99.96 and I’d call this a success.

CAA Blogger Shopping Challenge – Final Update

Week #5 of the CAA Blogger Challenge has come to a close and this will be my final post. It’s somewhat sad to see this challenge come to an end, not only because I’ve been able to spend $2500 but because I have enjoyed figuring out the best ways to save at CAA Partner locations.

For the past 5 weeks Extreme Couponing Mom and I have each been using a CAA No-Fee MasterCard with a limit of $2500 to shop at the CAA partner stores and blog about our experiences. The first blogger to save enough money with their CAA membership to cover the cost of a new CAA Plus membership + Plus Associate membership (totaling $209.05) will receive an East Side Mario’s OR Husky Gift Certificate worth $100!

caa Blogger challenge

I’m horrible with numbers these days so thankfully my husband has been keeping close track of what we have been spending. This will be my last post because we’ve done our job and spent the allotted money.

With a little over $600 to spend what’s a girl to do but return to her favourite two spending locations; The GAP Factory Store and Banana Republic Factory Store.

The GAP Factory Store

Oh hello again all of your gorgeous clothes, I’ve missed you so much over the past 3 weeks since I’ve visited last. In case you missed my last outing to The GAP Factory Store where I managed to save over $138 in store sales and CAA member discounts, feel free to take a moment and read all about it HERE.

Today’s shopping experience was very different than out last outing, this time we brought the children along! With two girls who have VERY different taste we played it safe and split up in the store. My youngest went into the Men’s department to help Daddy choose some goodies while I went with my not-so-girlie-girl into the girls section.

I honestly expected Syd to guide me over to the boys dept. in her usual way but she actually took her time and found quite a few items in the girls department. She even chose a bathing suit which almost had me flat on my butt with surprise; this is the girl who has worn boys swim trunks and a rash guard for YEARS!

I was so happy that I hugged her right there in the store….which apparently isn’t cool anymore….

Once Sydney was happy with the clothing she had chosen my husband and I traded children. He went to the change room with Syd while Miss Chelsea went in search of everything that sparkled.

Shopping with Chelsea is a treat, honestly it takes patience but oh how she loves fabrics, colours and can this girl drag out a decision! With arms filled with clothing I went into a change room with my youngest. NO way was she going in alone, we would be there all day!

In the end both kids and my husband had chosen loads of clothing which fit into our budget, now it was my turn. Frankly I’d bought so many clothes for myself at our first outing that I selected a few things and was satisfied.

We purchased 27 pieces of clothing which is seriously exciting for out little family. We stood watching the total rise feeling a bit strange but then the discounts came….in store discounts as well as the 10% off for showing our CAA membership card.

GAP Regular Price without discounts: $682.71

GAP Price after Sale discounts applied: $314.45 (Tax = $34.92)

GAP Price after Sale Discounts and CAA Member Show Your Card and Save Discount$ 403.18

With this purchase, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $40.92

The girls just love their new bathing suits!

Miss Chelsea requested I show you all some of her outfits, she simply loved giving a wee fashion show.

Chelsea GAP

Our GAP Factory Store shopping spree was amazing, by looking for the in-store sales and using our CAA membership discount we managed to get HUGE bang for the buck.

Banana Republic Factory Store Savings With CAA

On my previous shopping trip to Banana Republic Factory Store I found two gorgeous strapless maxi dresses which I adore. I’ve worn them and found that I felt a bit chilly at night and wanted a little white sweater to slip on if the weather is cooler so I sent the family off to eat while I quickly took a look at Banana Republic Factory Store.

Sure enough I found the perfect little white sweater and also found a few more items like the ultimate long white tank top, a sleeveless blouse, some shorts and super-cute jean capris. All of which were on sale within the store and once again I used my CAA membership for another 10% off.

BR CAA Savings total

GAP Regular Price without discounts: $166.96

GAP Price after Sale discounts applied: $101.96 (Tax = $34.92)

GAP Price after Sale Discounts and CAA Member Show Your Card and Save Discount$ 91.76

With this purchase, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $10.20

Canada’s Wonderland Savings with CAA

The very last thing we are buying to reach our spending goal is a day pass for the family to go to Canada’s Wonderland from our CAA store. With out CAA membership we get 15% off of regularly priced tickets which will make for a FAB family day.

We find that Wonderland works out well for us, Hubby and Syd hit the big rides while Chelsea and I prefer the little ones. She’s getting so big now that I can’t even go onto all of her favourites anymore…sniff.

CAA Blogger Shopping Challenge Summary

Participating in the CAA Blogger Shopping Challenge has been an honour. My family has benefitted from it immensely with wonderful memories and some HAWT gear. I’ve learned so much, now I’m confident that I know where my CAA membership can get me savings on products and services I use.

How about you, have you enjoyed our updates? Were you aware of the savings potential of a CAA membership?

WIN a Pair of Blundstone Boots for Father's Day

Finding the perfect Father’s Day gift isn’t easy when you have a man in your life who doesn’t exactly give you a list. This is why I was jazzed when Blundstone Footwear contacted me and offered me a pair of boots in exchange for telling you all about them, sharing my opinion and hosting a giveaway.

Blundstone Footwear has been available in Canada since 1993 and are now available at over 300 retailers. This is a boot like no other. With its rugged style this is a no-nonsense, go-anywhere boot is perfect for the do-anything type of Dad seeking comfort, durability with style.

There are dressier styles available, check out the Chisel Toe for business or the Chunk Sole which are a great option for your outdoorsy man.

“Dad’s do a lot for us, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to show dad how much you appreciate them,” said Ian Heaps of Blundstone Footwear. “Blundstones are widely recognized for their practicality and adaptability as footwear, but they are also an extremely versatile fashion accessory. They can be worn with jeans, shorts or slacks – the perfect gift to suit any dad’s taste.”

Shopping for Blundstone Boots for Father’s Day

Finding a retailer was simple, I just went to the Blundstone website, accessed the store locator tab and voila, I found a store which carries Blundstone boots here in our small town.

As I entered the Shoeper store I had to consciously avoid the ladies section, this is one of my favourite local stores and oh how the lovely Spring shoes were calling to me.

Once I’d made it past temptation I came upon a Blundstone display which laid out the different styles and colours for me. I really appreciate when a company puts in time and effort to display products effectively, mama needs all the help she can get when making a decision.

Love A Clear Display

Love A Clear Display

It’s easy to see these boots are fashionable and easily cross over between work and play. There is a variety of colours, textures and styles to choose from.

My husband is more of a rugged guy so I was drawn to the worn brown boots but in the end I played it safe and chose the Original In Black. It has a simple, clean look which my guy will appreciate and I’m certain it won’t take him long to beat them up a bit.

Although my husband hasn’t worn these boots yet I can easily recommend them. My Mother-In-Law has sworn by the comfort and quality of Blundstone boots for ages. I’ve known the woman for over 12 years and she’s always owned at least 2 pairs, one of which she had when I met her. How many women do you know that regularly wear a pair of boots for that many years?

Shhh don’t tell hubby this is his prezzie

I know my husband is going to be pleased with his Blundstones for Father’s Day, it’s a gift that he will actually use and appreciate.

WIN a Pair of Blundstone Boots

Blundstone Footwear has provided me with a pair of boots to giveaway to one lucky Canadian reader for Father’s Day!

Entry is simple, just follow the steps on the Rafflecopter form below. Giveaway will end June 28th and the winner will have 48 hours to respond via email before another winner will be chosen.

CAA Blogger Challenge – Finding Discounts at GAP & Banana Republic

I recently had the pleasure of announcing that I am one of the contestants in the CAA South Central Ontario Blogger Challenge. For the next 4-8 weeks(or however long it takes one of us to WIN) I’ll be competing with Aimee from Extreme Couponing Mom.

We will be using a CAA No-Fee MasterCard with a limit of $2500 to shop at the CAA partner stores and blog about our experiences. The first blogger to save enough money with their CAA membership to cover the cost of a new CAA Plus membership + Plus Associate membership (totaling $209.05) will receive an East Side Mario’s OR Husky Gift Certificate worth $100!

caa Blogger challenge

My first shopping trip was to Payless ShoeSource and believe me when I say I wanted to keep on shopping! Since my husband has Fridays off work and the kids were in school we decided to head off to Vaughan Mills Mall where I knew there were 2 clothing outlets which were CAA partners, which means I would get a discount when I showed my CAA membership card.

My husband is an utter nut and thoroughly enjoyed our “Mission to Shop”! As we drove there we had the iPhone app from CAA open and were exploring other partners who showed up on the screen along the way.

CAA appI didn’t even know there was an app for CAA, it’s a handy tool which I’m sure we will use in future because it shows partners we use often like PetroCanada (you get 20% more PetroPoints as a CAA member).

We arrived at Vaughan Mills and my gorgeous life-partner parked at the Bass Pro Shop so he could browse “While I was fresh”. Huh, well he’s right that I tire easily and probably wouldn’t want to browse after we’d shopped so I happily followed him and sat in boats, 4 wheelers, held rods to feel the “amazing weight balance” and even found my friends from the south. Oh how I love Duck Dynasty!

CAA Duck Dynasty

CAA Discount at the GAP Factory Store

The first store we were heading to was the Gap Factory Store, my darling husband wanted to continue to use the CAA app because he found it amusing watching me follow it but I insisted we use the information board. As we approached the Gap Factory Store my heart leapt when I saw the HUGE 60% off sign in the window, I knew this was going to be FUN!

CAA partner store the GAP

When we were planning this shopping trip I was concerned that I may not find many items in my size, I fall between a women’s size 12 and 14 and have found those are usually the sizes which aren’t in stock at factory stores.  I’m so glad I was wrong in this case! There is a large variety of sizing, from XS to XXL to suit many body types and styles.

We decided to split up and meet up once we had looked around our respective departments for a while. I expected hubby to reappear at my side in a short amount of time because of his in and out shopping style. Once again I was proven wrong and it was me who ended up searching him out.

When I found him with my arms overflowing with clothing to try on I was disappointed to find him with nothing in his hands. He had been carrying so many clothes around that a clerk had kindly put his items into a change room.

CAA Partner Gap Outfit

We went together to the change rooms and began what would be a hilarious 45 minutes of poses, model-like facial expressions and amusement for the staff and customers. We had such a fun time doing mini-fashion shows for each other (and everyone else) that we’re convinced we could do this more often!

At the cash register we dumped armfuls of goodies for the friendly clerk to ring in and reminded her that we had a CAA membership. Once all 16 items were rung in the clerk asked to see our CAA membership card and applied the 10% discount to everything, even sale items.

With this purchase, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $39.13.

CAA discount at the Banana Republic Factory Store

IMG_5753Our second destination was Banana Republic Factory Store where again I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of beautiful items available in my size. There were so many clothes which caught my eye and when I saw that all women’s clothes were 50% off for Mother’s Day I was over the moon!

This is a higher end store and I had a bit of a laugh at their sign identifying “Lounge Wear” which I generally call clothes these days.

Hubby and I had split up again in this store and met at the change rooms for fashion show #2. As the friendly clerk led me to my change room she asked what the number of items I had was. My response was “A TON” which brought a man who was in the next stall to hysterics…yeah sometimes I have that effect.

We enjoyed trying on the clothes and showing off the different looks, we were choosing clothing which perhaps we normally wouldn’t have and actually liked some of them. There’s something about getting clothing at a discount knowing that you can stack on a further discount for CAA membership which gave us permission.

In hindsight I should have taken photos of my husband as he tried on clothing and next time perhaps I’ll have him snap the shots of me so I don’t end up with these goofy change room shots.

CAA discount at Banana Republic

Banana Republic was a store which we hadn’t shopped at before but we’re really glad we did. Both my husband and I found various summer items which we really like AND we managed to save a bundle by going to their Factory Store and using our CAA 10% off.

Banana Republic Price after Sale discounts applied: $262.94 (Tax 34.18)

BR Price after Sale Discounts and CAA Member Show Your Card and Save Discount: $ 236.65

With this purchase, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $26.29.

To say that we’re happy with our purchases would be the understatement of the year, even my husband who still owns some pants from high school saw the value in the savings. He ended up with 5 shirts, 2 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of pants.

CAA partner GAP mens clothing

Each of our daughters now has a super-cute summer outfit from the GAP…you didn’t think we could actually avoid the children’s section did you?

And what about me? Oh well I may have managed to buy some incredible pieces I cannot wait to wear!!

That’s 2 gorgeous maxi dresses, a shorter strapless dress, 5 shirts, 1 tank and 3 very cute pairs of capris!

CAA partner Gap women clothes

It has been years since we’ve shopped for ourselves and oh it felt so good!

Take a look at the savings we had, in total between the store discounts and our CAA Member Show Your Card and Save Discount we saved $348.82!!!

There’s no denying there’s value in our CAA membership!

As of today, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $103.47.

Watch for more shopping experiences which I’ll share on all of my social media avenues.

So Proud to be a Contestant in the CAA Blogger Challenge

About a month ago I was looking around Facebook and saw that CAA South Central Ontario had announced they were accepting applications for a Blogging Challenge.

In a nutshell 2 bloggers would be chosen to receive a CAA No-Fee MasterCard with a limit of $2500 to shop at the CAA partner stores and blog about their experiences. The first blogger to save enough money with their CAA membership to cover the cost of a new CAA Plus membership + Plus Associate membership (totaling $209.05) will receive an East Side Mario’s OR Husky Gift Certificate worth $100!

I mean come on, how could I possibly resist applying when I’ve been a member for years and actively promote CAA here on SoberJulie.com?

Then last week the good news came, CAA chose me as one of the 2 bloggers to participate!!

For the next month (or however long it takes one of us to WIN) I’ll be competing with Aimee from Extreme Couponing Mom to save the most money possible.

Once I was done squealing, I began planning our shopping and excursions. This wasn’t simple, there are so many CAA partners to save with! The Hotels, Gas Stations, Movie Theatres and shopping locations all seemed to be screaming at me…..finally after taking a deep breath my husband and I decided my first outing would be to Payless ShoeSource with my Mum and our daughters to outfit everyone for Summer.

My CAA Membership Saved Me 10% at Payless ShoeSource

It felt so wonderful to phone my Mum and invite her to get gussied up to go on a shopping spree with me. After she recovered from shock we headed over to Payless and huddled up for our “team” meeting. I gave my daughters free rein to choose 1 pair of shoes each for themselves, ANY pair they wanted. This was the first time ever they had freedom to choose without my input.

We were approached by a very friendly lady who turned out to be the store manager and thankfully had a great sense of humor because my girls were getting loud. Once I explained that they were allowed to have 1 pair of their choice she took care of them so my Mum and I could shop.

As we strolled through our sizes, leisurely exploring I could hear my daughters happily nattering away about the shoes. At one point I went to peek at what they were up to and found my DIVA Chelsea looking very comfy, happily wearing a new hat, glasses and some very blingy shoes.

CAA Blogger Challenge

Sydney who isn’t so much of a girlie-girl was in such a good mood she exchanged her flat cap for some pink bling and allowed me to snap a picture of her!

CAA Bogger challenge in Payless shoes

After about 2 hours with the 4 of us having far too much fun in the store we had covered the counter with our choices, feeling very good about all of our purchases. As the manager scanned the items my blood pressure began to rise, frankly I’m not used to wracking up a large total on a whim.

CAA membership Shopping Challenge Payless

In the end we were quite practical, here’s the list of our purchases:

For my Dad:

  • 1 pair of loafers

For my Mum:

  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of sunglasses
  • 1 pair of cute loafers

For my Husband

  • 1 pair of loafers
  • 1 pair of sneakers

For Me:

  • 1 pair of canvas loafers
  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of dressy flats
  • 1 hat

For Sydney:

  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of loafers
  • 1 pair of sunglasses
  • socks
  • shoe fresheners (she begged for them)

For Chelsea:

  • 1 pair of sandles
  • 1 pair of summer blingy sandals
  • 1 blingy hat
  • 1 pair of sunglasses

That’s 19 items which ended up totaling as follows:

Regular Price without discounts: $415.84

Price after Sale discounts applied: $380.34

Price after Sale Discounts and CAA Member Show Your Card and Save Discount: $ 342.29

As of today, by using my CAA membership card at this CAA Partner I’ve saved $38.05.

We had a BLAST shopping at Payless, I did review my receipt at the cash register and realized the CAA Membership discount hadn’t been applied but the manager quickly rectified that matter and off we went.

Watch for more shopping experiences which I’ll share on all of my social media avenues, this is exciting to see all of the opportunites for savings with my CAA membership!

If you are someone who loves to be barefoot like I do you may be looking for shoes that are super-comfy, light but still provide the support you need. OTZShoes have the answer.

OTZShoes has a fascinating story. In a nutshell the one of the owners developed OTZShoes based upon the oldest shoes ever found which belonged to Oetzi, the iceman, and dated back to 3300B.C. He realized he could redesign this iconic shoe incorporating today’s trend, comfort and technology.

The OTZShoe

Each Spring I look around for the perfect shoe to join me in my adventures. It has to be comfortable, provide lots of support, be fashionable and not irritate my back injuries. This many not seem like a long list of requirements but I’ve found it can be quite challenging. Too often I find the support and comfort without the fashion.

I was given the opportunity to review my choice of color in the OTZ300GMS line. This shoe is a unisex model which features a linen upper in various colors, each with a CORKlite™ footbed and outsold made of rubber and Jute fibers.

I chose to review the OTZ300GMS Linen Fluro Pink simply because it is very fashionable and would be something people would notice. After reading the online description I had high hopes of the support and comfort it would provide.

My review of OTZ300GMS

The shoes arrived in a box with a travel bag. I was immediatly pleased with the vibrant color of the Pink linen. The shoe’s linen upper adapted to my foot contors, the openening was very snug at first but as I put on the shoes over a week it gradually expanded until it was the perfect size.

The CORKlite™ footbed is removable, but with my back issues I chose to keep it in place, realizing I need the support. It softened and molded to my foot over time and now I find it to be very comfy and my heels don’t slip at all.

These casual, comfy shoes are very light, provide me with the support I need and are fashionable.

The OTZ300GMS is offered in a variety of colors and textures, even Pony Hair so I’m sure you’ll find one which fits your taste and with an opening price of $80USD I consider them a very good buy!
